Like all firebox side bricks, this pair protects the steel or cast iron casing from direct flame contact and reflects heat back into the firebox rather than letting it dissipate through the sides, which supports a more efficient burn. Their position near the stove door means they can also pick up occasional knocks when fuel is loaded, on top of the gradual wear every brick experiences from repeated heating and cooling. Cracking, chipping or crumbling are the usual signs a pair needs replacing, and it's worth doing this as soon as damage is visible, since a gap in the side lining lets flame reach the stove body directly, which can lead to overheating and shorten the appliance's working life over time.
Firebox dimensions differ between stove outputs and marks, so this pair is sized specifically for the pre-August 2012 6kW Mk1 Loxton/Churchill build and won't fit the 5kW or 8kW versions or later marks.
